Jason Sharp has been a fixture of Montréal’s experimental/improv scene for many years, chiefly as a saxophonist exploring drone and durational music, while also collaborating in a wide variety of jazz, avant and contemporary music ensembles – he has several prior links to Constellation, notably as part of Sam Shalabi’s Land Of Kush orchestra and Matana Roberts’ Coin Coin Chapter One, and as a session player on Thee Silver Mt Zion’s 2010 album Kollaps Tradixionales. He has shared the stage with Montreal improvisational artists such as Lori Freedman, Jean Derome, and Malcom Goldstein, as well as free jazz luminaries such as David S. Ware, Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, and Ken Vandermark.
In its current iteration, Sharp’s work as a composer, conductor and band leader uses custom-built equipment to translate breath and heart rate into variegated sonic triggers, along with other modes of signal processing and in tandem with traditional instrumentation.
A Boat Upon Its Blood, Sharp’s first album-length recording to be released under his own name, is a bracingly meditative multi-movement instrumental work that charts a highly compelling arc of shifting energies and intensities, tracing a heterogeneous cycle of minimalisms and maximalisms. Featuring Sharp’s own reed playing and contributions from a few guest musicians, particularly Josh Zubot on violin and Joe Grass on pedal steel guitar, Sharp looms as a unique and invigorating new voice in modern-contemporary music. We're honored to be releasing A Boat Upon Its Blood on Constellation 30 September 2016.
Thee venerable Wire magazine has featured Jason Sharp's debut video this past week. The film, shot by Jacky Mills and Carlo Guillermo Proto and assembled by Proto, is a document of Jason's debut performance at Montreal's Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival with the performers featured on A Boat Upon Its Blood, Joe Grass on pedal steel guitar and Joshua Zubot on violin. Montreal and Toronto will have several chances to welcome the forthcoming releases by Automatisme, Jason Sharp, and Off World. All three artists will be performing in distinct settings that will allow for a proper acquaintance with their new work. The first event will take place on Wednesday, 21 September. Automatisme will be opening for Jerusalem in my Heart and Jessica Moss at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal as part of the Nocturne at the POP Montréal International Music Festival. On Thursday, 22 September, Jason Sharp will be performing along with his band as the opening guest for the newly-added final night of Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s residence at the Théâtre Paradoxe in Montreal’s Ville-Émard borough. There are still a handful of tickets remaining for this performance, though they’re sure to go quickly. On Friday, 23 September, Automatisme will bring his multidisciplinary installation performance to Festival Agrirock in his hometown of Saint-Hyacinthe at Centre Expression. Off World will take over Toronto’s intimate Ratio space for a three-night stint from 21-23 October. Stay tuned for news of other dates, hopefully a little eastward down the 401. Would you like to pre-order these releases? Lucky for you, we have a bundle special until release day on 30.09. See below for more details.
We support indie stores and encourage you to do the same in your country/region. Ordering 'locally' should also provide significant savings on shipping costs for the 3x180gLP bundle (this costs $22-26 to ship from Montréal Canada to USA and $50-60 to ship from Montréal Canada to overseas destinations!).
These new releases are wildly different yet satisfyingly leftfield albums that share an electric thread of sorts. Electronic music strategies, technologies, histories and sensibilities come into play, in very diverse ways, with each of these debut records – making them stand out a little differently in the context of the Constellation catalogue perhaps, but also informing one another and making a lot of sense to our ears as an album trio (somewhat in the spirit of our Musique Fragile series).
Each album can of course also be pre-ordered individually:
CST117: Off World • 1 CST118: Automatisme • Momentform Accumulations CST119: Jason Sharp • A Boat Upon Its Blood
In honour of the bundle announcement, we’re also making a new track available from each artist, taken from our 0 Tonne Seize digital bonus album:

With these releases around the corner, Off World, Automatisme and Jason Sharp are each planning hometown album release concerts in early fall. Specific announcements about these will soon follow.
The third of our new release announcements this fall is A Boat Upon Its Blood from Montréal-based improviser, composer and reedist Jason Sharp; a fixture of Montreal's avant-garde and improv music communities, and an alumnus of Sam Shalabi's Land of Kush orchestra and Matana Roberts’ Coin Coin Chapter One ensemble. With this debut recording issued under his own name, Sharp presents a highly compelling suite of contemporary electro-acoustic music that reveals the shape and scope of his vision as a composer and bandleader in his own right.
Inspired by Robert Creeley’s poem “The Heart”, and using custom-built equipment to translate breath and heart rate into variegated sonic triggers, along with other modes of signal processing and in tandem with traditional instrumentation, A Boat Upon Its Blood features Sharp’s own reed playing and contributions from a few guest musicians, particularly Josh Zubot on violin and Joe Grass on pedal steel guitar. The work is a tour-de-force of genre-defying, immersive, accessible and deeply satisfying modern composition.
A Boat Upon Its Blood is out September 30. Find more details at the official album release page HERE. Pre-ordering will be available in August (we'll be keeping you posted).
Meantime, check out the newly shared album track "A Boat Upon Its Blood (Pt. 1)" below, along with the previously shared "A Boat Upon Its Blood (Pt. 3)".
