As most now know, Jordan McKenzie passed away accidentally on 18 January on Hornby Island, British Columbia. We are shattered and saddened and our hearts go out to his beloved partner Emi, and to his family and friends.
We got to know Jordan in Montréal in 2008 as he was playing shows with Emi in their band Elfin Saddle, and we had the profound pleasure of becoming friends with him and Emi, and releasing their work over several years. Alongside Elfin Saddle, Jordan and Emi also pursued an inspiring visual, installation, and video art practice which informed and infused their work as a musical group. Perennially grappling with the confines of city life, Jordan and Emi moved to Hornby Island in late 2013 to pursue their dream of breathing fresher air and living more closely and harmoniously with nature. Last fall Emi became pregnant and their daughter is expected in the spring.
In a eulogy published at The Globe and Mail, Sean Michaels wrote, “I was always marvelling at his kindness, the way his tenderness could live alongside pragmatism, discernment and an explosive sense of humour.” During the week since Jordan’s death, love and support for Emi from friends and collaborators in the music community, in Montreal and across the country, has flowed with great abundance, and friends from Hornby Island launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Emi through the coming months. If you’re able please contribute.
Jordan was a brilliant, inspired, sensitive, compassionate, gentle, creative, serious, and thoughtful soul – truly one of the finest people we’ve had the privilege of knowing and working with. Emi is one of those people too, and she is very much in our thoughts. To all who were fortunate to know Jordan, our condolences on the passing of this beautiful person.
