Thee Silver Mt. Zion was formed in 1999 by Efrim Menuck with Thierry Amar and Sophie Trudeau. All three were also members of the large rock ensemble Godspeed You Black Emperor! The band is based in Montral and has taken in several additional members over the years, including Jessica Moss, who became a core member of the project in 2001. Eric Craven also played drums in the band in 2007/2008.
Jem Cohen invited Thee Silver Mt. Zion to help arrange and record an album for Vic Chesnutt in 2006. The resulting North Star Deserter was released by Constellation the following year.
Efrim, Thierry and Jessica became an integral part of the Vic Chesnutt touring band when Vic went out to perform the record on European tours in 2007 and 2008. Drummer David Payant joined this touring group, and was part of the Empires Of Tin performance. David also joined Thee Silver Mt. Zion proper as the group's new drummer in summer 2008.
Thee Silver Mt. Zion has released five albums on Constellation.
Efrim, Thierry, Jessica and David are currently working on a new album of Vic Chesnutt songs.
