T. Gowdy
T. Gowdy is a Canadian music producer and audio/visual artist. He sang choral music professionally with the American Boychoir in Princeton, New Jersey, before pursuing classical guitar studies and a Master’s in Sound Recording at the Schulich School of Music in Montreal, Quebec. Following his graduation in 2007, Gowdy began a career as a freelance producer and sound engineer, credited with more than seventy album productions between 2008 and 2020, including collaborations with artists such as Ada Lea, Ensemble, and SUUNS. His work explores sound feedback to enhance interactivity in sound environments, alongside the deconstruction and re-synthesis of urban sonic landscapes.
T. Gowdy released his first solo album, B-Stock, in February 2018. He supported Actress in Montreal and Devon Walsh on his North American tour, while his live audio/visual installations were showcased in various art galleries in Berlin and at MUTEK Festival in Montreal. His second album, Vitrify Kate, followed in the summer of 2018.
In 2019, he released Pachira Aquatica and presented audio/visual installations throughout Poland and Germany, as well as at the Spanish edition of MUTEK Festival in Barcelona. In addition to support slots for Byron Westbrook, Lucrecia Dalt, and Aaron Dilloway in Montreal, he served as 2019’s Artist-in-Residence at the Eastern Bloc Data Salon XXXIII. This residency yielded the installation Forward Feed and a duo performance with Adam Basanta.
T. Gowdy’s third album, and his first for Constellation Records, Therapy With Colour, was released in May 2020. That same year, he contributed to the label’s Corona Borealis series. Live performances included MUTEK Montreal in September and Node Festival in Frankfurt in October.
In March 2021, Gowdy composed and performed Experialism for Hellerau Europäisches Zentrum der Künste (The European Center for the Arts) in Dresden, Germany. This ambitious piece layered 8-bit recordings of his own vocal harmonies with pointillist click tapestries, exploring the sharp juxtaposition of experience re-synthesized with itself. A performance at MUTEK Barcelona in May 2021 was followed by Experience Imperialism, a presentation at Montreal’s Suoni Per Il Popolo music festival curated by Gowdy, which featured new works by himself, Le Désert Mauve, and Stéphanie Castonguay. Initiated in 2020, Experience Imperialism examines the socio-economic commodification of human experience.
In August 2021, Gowdy collaborated with light artist Anastasija Delidova to produce Peribitive, an exploration of kinesthetic perception based on F.M. Alexander’s theories. Presented at the NewNow Festival in Essen, this site-specific piece took place in the decommissioned Zollverein coal mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Further performances in 2021 included an audiovisual show at Timezones Festival in Italy and opening for SUUNS in Berlin. In 2022, he released his fourth album, Miracles, via Constellation Records and performed at MUTEK and Transart Festivals in 2023, alongside several shows in Poland.
In 2024, Gowdy composed the score for the speculative fiction film Common Pear, directed by Alex Harrison, which is set to premiere at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam in 2025.
