Cellist, composer, and environmental activist Rebecca Foon has been a fixture of the Montréal DIY music community for over two decades, performing and recording in a wide array of contexts, most notably as co-founder of the modern chamber post-rock ensemble Esmerine, and as a member of Thee Silver Mt. Zion (2001-2008) and Set Fire To Flames (2000-2004). Foon has appeared on countless recordings, by artists like Carla Bozulich, Patrick Watson, British Sea Power, Little Scream, and Grant Hart. She has performed collaboratively with Patti Smith, Laurie Anderson, and Tanya Tagaq among many others.

Foon has also released several acclaimed solo albums as Saltland and under her own name. Signed to Montréal indie label Constellation, Esmerine has been nominated for and won numerous Canadian Juno awards across its discography in both Best Instrumental Album and Best Album Artwork categories, most recently winning both awards in 2022. 

Foon is co-founder of  Pathway to Paris, an international concert series that enlists musicians and artists to help mobilize around the Paris Agreement, bringing together the likes of Patti Smith, Thom Yorke, Cat Power, Michael Stipe, Talib Kwali, Joan Baez, and Flea with writers/activists Bill McKibben, Naomi Klein, and Vandana Shiva, among many others.

Foon is also the co-founder of Junglekeepers, a conservation organisation that protects Amazon rainforest in Peru. Most recently her artistic practice has extended to photography, including the Ascension exhibition at Ellephant Gallery (Montréal) in 2023, exploring themes of eco-geography and environmental responsibility in large-scale lightbox works. Her latest suite of post-classical chamber music Reverie (Constellation, 2025), made with her sister Aliayta Foon-Dancoes, features her photography in the album art. Foon lives in Montréal where she continues to collaborate and advocate around intersections of environmental justice and interdisciplinary artistic practice.
